Individualized, high impact 1-on-1 tutoring and coaching sessions form the core of our practice at Hirsen Test Prep. With over 10 years specializing in grad admissions exams, we know what works best. It’s more than just how to pick all the right answers — we make sure you have a plan, work efficiently, stay focused, and overcome every challenge on your way to scoring all the points you deserve on test day.
How does it work?
Whether you want to schedule a session, or just need to get a couple questions answered, start with our First Things First form. It takes less than 2 minutes to complete, and we’ll be in touch with you by the next day.
Planning and strategy sessions
After a brief phone call with the tutor to go over details and confirm scheduling availability, we set up a 1-hour planning and strategy session. During that meeting, you’ll hear about best practices for solving questions on your exam, and for planning your study and practice time. You’ll also go over a personalized suggested weekly practice plan, based on your input about your goals, schedule, and other commitments. Your plan includes recommendations for study materials and other resources, like realistic practice tests.
If you’re retaking, we can use your previous experience to create a section-by-section strategy for gaining all the extra points you deserve. If you’re new to the test, we’ll review the sections and question types to make sure you know what you’re up against, and to start identifying the best ways to optimize your score.
Winning practice time
Do you know how you’ll spend all your hours of test prep practice? The data shows it takes over 100 hours to get an optimal score, but most test-takers don’t see the progress they want from just watching videos and trying questions. Do you know how you’ll choose the best approaches to all the different kinds of questions? Everyone knows the explanations “make sense” when you watch a video, but few can actually re-create the steps later without making mistakes.
Hirsen Test Prep clients are supplied with review worksheets for the exam’s most challenging sections. The review worksheets are detailed forms that guide our assessment of your effectiveness on practice questions. Reviewing questions with the worksheets gives your practice session clear structure and measurable objectives. They’re precise and easy-to-use tools to keep your practice focused on progress and points. Our clients love that their independent study time is never wasted, and is often as impactful for their scores as live tutoring sessions.
For many test-takers, regular once or twice a week sessions for two or three months before the test are critical to reaching ambitious admissions goals. In these sessions, the bulk of the time is spent on detailed review of practice questions and tests you’ve tried during the previous week. We analyze your work, address inefficiencies in your approach, confirm your progress, and keep you motivated and organized for the week ahead. We also brush up on academic topics when it’s needed, and identify patterns in your wrong answers that lead to better choices and higher scores the next time around.
Review sessions run 1 or 1.5 hours. Remote sessions meet by Skype, Google Hangouts, or a voice call, with the help of a simple web-based whiteboard (with no registration, download, or installation needed). In-person sessions meet on the campus of DePaul University in Chicago. Hirsen Test Prep clients pay as they go, session by session, so you don’t get overcommitted, or in case you just need a session or two of expert input.
Making takeaways stick
Right after each session ends, you’ll receive a session recap by email. It includes a summary of the most valuable takeaways from the work you did with your tutor during the session. The recaps also track when you make changes to your practice schedule, and expectations for what you’ll accomplish before the next session.
And of course, you have access to feedback from your tutor throughout the process, by email or text.
